Apple's $3 billion acquisition of Beats Electronics is finally complete. The Cupertino company announced the deal on its website, but didn't offer up much about how they plan to integrate Beats into the Apple experience moving forward. But they did welcome Beats "to the family."

Apple dedicated a whole page on its website to the Beats announcement, and it included the following statement regarding the acquisition:

Today we are excited to officially welcome Beats Music and Beats Electronics to the Apple family. Music has always held a special place in our hearts, and we're thrilled to join forces with a group of people who love it as much as we do. Beats cofounders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre have created beautiful products that have helped millions of people deepen their connection to music. We're delighted to be working with the team to elevate that experience even further. And we can't wait to hear what's next.

Though the deal was originally announced back in May, it didn't close until now, and now that it has, many are wondering just what exactly Apple plans to do with Beats. And there is certainly no single answer because as a company, Beats has diversified itself attractively.

According to CNET, they manufacture headphones, integrate their audio tech into mobile devices and also have launched their own music streaming service: Beats Music. Apple has long been rumored to have plans of its own for a music streaming service, and this acquisition may have given them what they need to launch their own competitor to Spotify and Pandora.

The deal was approved relatively quickly, which should come as no surprise, since the two companies don't directly compete with each other.

And while many are wondering about what the future of Apple will look like with Beats on board, Apple is reportedly looking to streamline Beats workforce before anything else.

CNET is reporting that Apple is planning to layoff as many as 200 of Beats 700 employees. Apparently Apple feels that a number of positions within its new company are now redundant.

The main cuts are expected to come from human resources, finance and any other roles where there is perceived redundancy between the two companies.

While some Beats employees who will see their positions eliminated have been offered new jobs at Apple, the rest have only been given a guarantee that their positions will last through January of next year.

Streamlining a workforce after a merger isn't out of the ordinary and is an indication Apple is serious about getting down to business with its new acquisition. Although, what exactly that means still remains a mystery.
