Dallas and Forth Worth transit riders will now enjoy paperless commuting through the newly launched smartphone transit ticketing app - GoPass.
The transit authorities of Forth Worth, Denton and Dallas are making is easier for locals and tourists to secure their bus and train tickets through GoPass. The free app was made available last September 16 and has had more than 2,500 downloads on the first few weeks following its launch.
GoPass lets transit riders purchase bus and train tickets without having to line up at ticket machines. According to DART CFO David Leininger, it's not the ticketing issue that makes the smartphone transit ticketing app interesting but the convenience.
"We bank on our smartphones. We buy coffee on our phones. We buy lots of things on our smartphones. Why not buy our transit tickets?" DART spokesman Morgan Lyons told CBS News.
GoPass is fairly easy to use. Riders of the DART, the T and the DCTA simply have to download the free smartphone transit ticketing app onto their device. Apple users can download the app from HERE while Android users can download the app from HERE.
To set up the app, the user has to register his or her phone number onto the app first. A verification code will then be sent to the user which he or she will use to verify the created account. The next step is to link one's credit card onto the created account.
Users may now purchase tickets for DART, the T and the DCTA through their smartphones. All tickets purchased through the app come in as "not yet activated." To activate the ticket, simply slide the bar to the right. The pass color then turns yellow or orange and then turns green when activated.
GoPass app users can purchase tickets up to 60 days in advance before using them. Aside from ticket purchasing, the application also helps transit riders plan trips. It shows several route maps, arrival and departure times and even events!
