The movie "Guardians of the Galaxy" is all set to be a summer blockbuster. It's nearing a $100 million box office opening weekend, according to estimates. The movie features characters such as a super-strong tree, a foul-mouthed raccoon with a trigger finger, a green woman and a killer soundtrack of 1970s music.
The movie has gotten positive reviews across the board.
"Why can't all comic-book movies be this much fun," asked Miami.com. "Granted, a talking raccoon named Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) would be out of place in the brooding Dark Knight pictures, and a talking tree (Vin Diesel) that knows only three words - "I am Groot" - would have stood out against the somber backdrop ofMan of Steel. But director James Gunn (Slither, Super) has a luxury all those other movies didn't: These characters are, at least by Batman standards, relatively obscure, so there are no specific targets he needs to hit, no specific origin stories he needs to tell," said the review.
And the movie isn't just for comic nerds. " 'Guardians of the Galaxy' burns through that comic-book burnout feeling that had started to dog the genre and reminds you how lively and energetic these films can be when treated with just the right amount of tongue-in-cheek disrespect. The movie leaves you happy and energized, and you also come away with a better understanding of the bigger picture Marvel is building with these films. Whether you have ever heard of the Guardians of the Galaxy matters not (I hadn't)."
And although some of the dialogue of one of the movie's co-stars, Rocket Racoon might be a little extreme for kids, the character is projected to be one of the winners of the franchise.
"You can never fully predict a breakout character, but we knew he was funny and that kids especially would respond to him, since, like many kids, he is underestimated because of his size," an executive for Marvel, Disney Consumer Products, Paul Glitter, told TheWrap.com "Rocket is unlike anything we have in Marvel merchandise, and licensees have risen to the expected demand with a range of Rocket-inspired products," he said.
