Apple just updated its MacBook Pro line. The Apple Store was down briefly while the new changes were added, but it's back up now and fans of the legendary laptop workhorse will be pleased with what's new.
Interestingly, Apple didn't announce anything regarding Mac hardware during this years' WWDC keynote address, unlike the past two developer conferences. And while the updates are minor, they are welcome.
CNET is reporting that the 2014 15-inch MacBook Pro models will come with 16GB of RAM standard, which will add some welcome heft under the hood. And this update won't set you back anything extra, as Apple has kept the price the same as last year for the 15-inch models.
The new 13-inch editions have updated processors--Intel Haswell 2.6GHz Core i5's and 2.8GHz Core i7's--along with 8GB of RAM standard and will also sport Retina Displays at a 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution.
The previous 13-inch model saw a price drop to coincide with the addition of the 2014 models, and is now $1,099.
The new 15-inch models will each feature an Intel Core i7 processor clocked at either 2.2 or 2.5GHz. The premium option also has an Nvidia GeForce GT 750 video card onboard, while its lesser siblings sport the Intel Iris Pro integrated graphics configuration.
The entry-level 15-inch model also has a lower price-point of $1,999.
Amidst what has been a stingy market for personal computers, Apple has still managed to excel far beyond its competitors, and CEO Tim Cook referred to the US market as a "very, very" strong market for the Mac for this year's third quarter, reports CNET.
Case in point: Mac sales numbers have increased by as much as 18%, up to 4.4 million, in spite of estimates by the IDC that the market itself has shrunk by 2% over the same period.
Horace Dediu, Asymco analyst, stated that Macs are "more profitable than all the other vendors put together," CNET reports.
