The youngest of the Jonas Brothers, Nick Jonas, has ventured off on his own and released his debut solo track titled, "Chains." The 21-year-old is ready to shed his pop star image and bring forth an older, more adult type of music.
The song has a slow-jam, R&B vibe that is completely distinct from the bop-your-head pop songs the Jonas Brothers, which disbanded October of last year, have been known to do. The music starts with a simple back beat with Nick coming in after a few seconds, showing off his silky, romantic voice.
According to JustJared Jr., a source explains that the song is personal to Nick; it's a "metaphor for what he has been feeling all these years...He feels free now for the first time in his life. He's making music he believes in. He's done apologizing for everything and trying to be perfect. He's just going to be himself; if people like him, great, if not, he's done giving a s?-?-?t."
The track, produced by Jason Evigan, has a lot of emotion on the song with Nick singing lines like: "Gave you my heart, but you took my soul" and "You got me in chains, you got me in chains for your love."
"Chains" is the first single from Jonas' upcoming full-length untitled album on Island Records. Evigan has produced other popular tracks like "Talk Dirty" from Jason Derulo as well as Demi Lovato's "Heart Attack," reported Radio.com.
"It's a song that embodies the feeling of being trapped in a love that is hopeless," Jonas told MTV during an interview. "I think it's a great new sound for me and a really good taste tester for this project." As a soul fan, Jonas explains that's the type of music he wants to make now. "That's what I grew up on and that's what feels natural when I open my mouth to sing and so having a pop alternative music bed with the soul vocal, I feel like really works," he said.
Nick describes "Chains" as a song people can relate to. He tells MTV, "[Chains] it can be about anything that entangles you in your life and doesn't let you do what you need to do to feel free.".
