Rumors are beginning to swirl as the anticipated countdown of the iPhone 6 enters full swing.
The Wall St. Journal is reporting that Apple has ordered 70 to 80 million 4.7 and 5.5-inch units. This would top Apples previous totals for the 5S and 5C, which were in the 50 to 60 million-unit range.
The report used unnamed sources to confirm that Apple has asked its component manufacturers to be ready to have 120 million units by the end of the year. This high total is a speculation based on the phone's popularity as well as a safety measure due to the high complexity of the manufacturing process.
With Apple setting its sights on the biggest screen to date, there are more factors that go into production. The sapphire glass feature on the 5.5-inch model will prove to be a challenge, but if successful it will revolutionize the industry. Sapphire glass can be seen in tests as being scratch-proof from a knife or car key.
Unlike the new iPhone 6, the 5S and 5C only had 4-inch screens. By upping the ante and going for a full inch and half larger, Apple is putting their cards on the table and calling out the competition.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 has a screen size of 5.1 inches, which has always been a marketing point taken away from the small-screened iPhones. Apple is changing the game by destroying the one thing that the Galaxy S5 had going for it.
The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 is said to come with a 128 GB option. 128 GB's would be the greatest amount of memory ever offered in an iPhone.
The iPhone 6 is rumored to be released in late September, which in years past has been the usual time. Hopefully the price will have come down to earth a bit before Christmas rolls around.
This fall will be iPhone season, but it will be interesting to watch how Samsung decides to counter punch.
