The first look into "The Imitation Game" starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing has been released. The trailer shows clips of the film about the English mathematician and codebreaker who cracked the German Enigma code during World War II.
According to The Verge, "the movie focuses on the computer science pioneer's work on cracking the German Enigma Code, while also touching on Turing's struggle with being a gay man in England at a time when homosexual acts were illegal."
In the short footage released, the 38-year-old actor does a great job of channeling Turing and plays the role naturally. With his background in theater, television and film, Cumberbatch is seen as a great casting choice for the film.
According to Out.com, Turing was an expert logician, codebreaker, cryptologist and computer scientist. His life ended tragically after being convicted for "indecent" behavior with a man he was romantically involved with. The famed scientist was chemically castrated in 1952 and two years later, Turing took his own life.
It was only last year when Turing got the recognition he deserved for his work through an official pardon by the queen. In the announcement, the Queen said: "Dr. Turing deserves to be remembered and recognised for his fantastic contribution to the war effort and his legacy to science."
Prime Minister David Cameron described Turing as a "remarkable man," and noted "His actions saved countless lives. He also left a remarkable national legacy through his substantial scientific achievements, often being referred to as the father of modern computing."
"The Imitation Game" is seen as a tribute to the life of the genius who helped shorten the Second World War by two years, as some experts say. This portrayal of Cumberbatch is expected to tell the story of the man who had given invaluable contributions to the world.
"The Imitation Game" is set for release on November 21. Aside from Cumberbatch, the film stars Keira Knightley, Mark Strong, Matthew Goode and many more.
