An 8-year police veteran was shot in a motel room near Interstate 35 in San Antonio.
According to a report, the wounded officer joined a man and a woman inside a motel room at the Super 8. The Super 8 is located at 1614 N. St. Mary's St in San Antonio.
The police officer, 34-year old Aaron Terrazas, was dealing with an argument between the two. Gunshots from the motel room were heard about 8:00 am.
William McManus, Chief of the San Antonio Police Department said that the suspect "shot through the door and the officer was struck in the head." Due to the proximity of the motel room's window to the elevated lanes of Interstate 35, the said lanes were shut down.
Terrazas is recovering from the shot. He was admitted to the intensive care unit of the San Antonio Military Medical Center. McManus told San Antonio News Express that the shot was not just a graze. "I wouldn't call it a graze. It's a serious wound," he said.
The suspect, identified by his wife is 38-year old Melvin McKinney. McKinney reportedly fired several gunshots. One was made through the door and several other gunshots were made after opening it. The woman, allegedly McKinney's wife, was able to escape says Los Angeles Times.
The shooting led to a day-long standoff when McKinney locked himself down for 9 hours before he surrendered to the police. SWAT team units and police helicopters surrounded the area. Apart from portions of I-35 being closed off, the area between Interstates 10 and 27 were also closed down. Central Catholic and Providence high schools were also on temporary lockdown.
McKinney surrendered by 5:00 pm. The past week, a warrant for aggravated assault of a public servant was issued for a man of the same name and age. In the past, McKinney was charged with drug possession. A warrant was also reportedly issued for him in March for an assault incident.
