No. 1 overall draft pick Andrew Wiggins will reportedly be signed by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the coming week.
ESPN sources claim that the delay in signing Wiggins is not related to the rumors that he is being considered to be traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Kevin Love. The Cavs are only studying their financial options before finally signing Wiggins in $5.5M deal, says the outlet.
According to ESPN, trading Love has been discussed since LeBron James decided to return to Cleveland. Sources claim that Minnesota also wants to get back Wiggins in exchange for Love.
But the delay in signing in Wiggins has gained added attention especially with Love dragged into the equation.
In a similar report, CBS Sports said that if Wiggins signs with the Cavs, the team will have to wait for 30 days before they can trade the player. This, according to the same report, would not mean that "the deal is precluded from happening." It added that the teams can still wait for the given period then agree.
ESPN said in an earlier report that the Cavs were ready to offer Wiggins for a Minnesota trade but that the plan has been stalled with the Wolves refusal to send Love to Cleveland without getting the rookie first.
The same report quoted Cavs coach David Blatt as saying "That's why they call them rumors. Sooner or later, in one's career, you're going have to deal with it. So if he has to deal with it now, then so be it. It's the summer league. He's learning everything as he goes along."
The coach added that he still does not want to talk to Wiggins about theses issues. "At least not right now. You know, that's the beauty of these games: There's always something to talk about," Blatt said.
A three-time All Star player, Love will be a free agent for the next NBA season and has told the Timberwolves that he will not re-sign with the team, ESPN says. After signing in Wiggins, the Cavs are also expected to sign in free agent Mike Miller for two years, adds the outlet.
The report adds that Cleveland is also interested in getting Ray Allen after he was recruited by James and Miller, his former teammates but that he will only be offered a $1.4 million contract.
