With the wind whipping the Washington wildfires in new directions, hundreds of residents are left to face the mounting destruction from the massive blaze.

Massive wildfires in Washington have been burning for days, and have caused massive devastation, burning down homes and forcing mass evacuations for residents.

The flames have begun to calm down near Pateros, the area most devastated by the blaze, but the weekend's howling winds are pushing the wildfire in new directions.

Washington Governor Jay Inslee said about 50 fires were burning in Washington, spurred on by hot, dry weather, erratic gusts of wind and lightning.

About 2,000 firefighters are battling the blaze in the eastern part of the state. A dozen helicopters from the Department of Natural Resources and the National Guard are also in tow, along with a Washington State Patrol spotter plane. Active duty military could be called in as well, Inslee said.

"This, unfortunately, is not going to be a one-day or one-week event," he said.

Karina Shagren, spokeswoman for the state's Military Department, said 100 National Guard troops were on standby, and up to 1,000 more in Yakima could receive additional fire training.

Still, there is hope for Pateros residents, in spite of the devastation.

According to Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers, the wildfire has has calmed down near Pateros, but not before blackening more than 260 square miles in the scenic Methow Valley northeast of Seattle and destroying about 100 homes.

"It’s just starting to run out of places to burn," he said.

Saturday's howling, erratic winds are blowing the fire -- which is still very much active -- in opposing directions, igniting new blazes, but for now, Pateros looks to be calming down.

"The wind is just howling up there," Rogers said.

Residents of Pateros are now left to survey the damage and smoldering rubble that the massive blaze has left behind.
