It's been quite a week for Marvel Comics' superheroes.

It was announced earlier this week that Thor is now a woman, and the comic titan announced on Wednesday that Captain America will be African-American in his next iteration.

Apparently, this comes as no surprise to the comic faithful, as this change to the first avenger's identity has been rumored for sometime. Joe Quesada, Marvel CCO, revealed the news about Cap on The Colbert Report Wednesday night.

Captain America is to be replaced by Sam Wilson, a superhero formerly called the Falcon, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Fans of this year's Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier will recognize Wilson's character, who played a prominent role in the film.

Stan Lee and Gene Colan created Falcon in 1969, who was the first "mainstream" African-American superhero. Two years later, in 1971, Wilson became a co-star with Captain American in Captain American and the Falcon, which ran until 1978.

Wilson has been used sporadically by Marvel, appearing here and there in limited runs for titles like Avengers, Mighty Avengers and, of course, Captain America. Wilson begins his new stint as "Star-spangled Man" this October in Captain America #25, which will be written by Rick Remember and drawn by Carlos Pacheco.

This will be the seventh Marvel character to inhabit the role of Captain America, and is the second time a "sidekick" has taken over for Cap this decade.

Quesada's guest spot on the Colbert Report was the second of two "high-profile" announcements from Marvel having to do with a member of the "Marvel movie franchise" made in the past few days.

On Wednesday, rumors surfaced that Marvel might have similar designs for Iron Man. This would mean that Thor, Captain America and Iron Man would all be "re-invented" for their fall renewal this year.

OTHER SUPERHEROES IN NEED OF 'FACELIFTS'

Given that Marvel seems like it is willing to remake any of its most popular characters, we thought it would be fun to make a list of other superheroes who could do with a makeover.

Gay Wolverine?

What could be more progressive than Marvel's most masculine property coming out of the closet? It would kind of make sense if you think about it. Logan does frequent a lot of truck stops. Just sayin'.

A Cooler Batman?

Looking at the DC Universe, what if Batman was black? And we're talking about an alternate universe where Bruce Wayne is actually black. None of this black side-kick taking over business. An African-American billionaire whose also the world's greatest detective? Why haven't we seen this yet?

Wonder Man?

You know, since Thor is taking on some estrogen, why not swap the Norse god out with Wonder Woman, and change that whole character over to a dude? Why not give some invisible plane love to the men for once?
