Want to know what season 11 of "Grey's Anatomy" has in store? Show creator Shonda Rhimes explains that even though the show branches out to reveal the individual stories of other cast, the show will center on the main character, Meredith Grey.
The medical drama will be focusing on the show's namesake, Meredith, played by Ellen Pompeo as she transitions from losing her bestfriend and "person", Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), and adjusts to her complicated career-meets-married life.
Rhimes spoke to TVLine and the 11th season will take off immediately, "24 hours...maybe," following the pervious season's finale.
The Hollywood Reporter was able to interview Rhimes on the upcoming season and found out the following juicy tidbits.
Grey is in a difficult moment in her life and that's what the show plans to emphasize -- how she copes and handles the struggles she faces.
"Right now, if you were in the writers' room, you would probably tell me that the theme is ‘Meredith,'" says Rhimes. "Because all I keep saying is, ‘The show is just about Meredith Grey!'"
She continues, "It's really a Meredith-centric season. She's lost her ‘person', her [half-]sister has shown up, her husband is chafing to go someplace else..."
When it comes to Meredith's marriage with "McDreamy", Rhimes shared that: "The idea that Derek thinks his career is more important than Meredith's is both true for him and frustrating for her. It doesn't make him a bad person because his career is more important than hers right now."
This is an explosive time for their marriage and challenges are abound and will focus on the challenges of married life. This is a reality many people face and is relatable. "I really like the idea of having them confront what I think is a challenge that a lot of women have to deal with: the idea that he thinks his career is more important than hers," explained Rhimes.
In relation to the new sibling reveal TVLine noted that Maggie, the child of Richard and Ellis "will be influenced by what Meredith went through with Lexie," her other half-sister, explained Rhimes. This is an especially interesting part for Rhimes as she's been excited and has been waiting "forever" to delve onto this part of Meredith's family's story.
She noted it was sometime before the Season 10 finale when Rhimes told the writers, "‘Annnnd... we're there,' and they all [cheered]. So it's pretty exciting."
To find out more about what happens to Grey and the rest of the medical staff, "Grey's Anatomy' Season 11 will air Thursday, Sept. 25, at 8/7c.
