Say goodbye to that hammer-wielding Norse god of olde -- Marvel Comics has a new vision for the epic character Thor, and it involves a bit of estrogen.

That's right, folks. Thor is now a woman.

Those big changes are coming, according to the publisher, in hopes that a female Thor will attract more women and girl readers.

The new Thor will no longer be the muscle-bound, bearded version either. With the new gender comes a new look, and it's one that is, well, pretty typical of the comic book industry.

It looks like based on the artwork, the new Thor will be pretty typical of the old-school comic book illustrations of women. Gone are the Norse locks and the hammer, and in its place is a busty blonde, complete with a superhero cape for good measure.

New York-based Marvel described the move as "one of the most shocking and exciting changes ever to shake one of the 'big three' of Captain America, Iron Man and Thor."

"No longer is the classic Thunder God able to hold the mighty hammer, Mjolnir, and a brand new female hero will emerge worthy of the name Thor," said the comic book giant.

Jason Aaron, writer of the new Thor series, also chimed in.

"This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is Thor," said Aaron.

Fans won't have to wait long to check out the Thor goods. She's set to be unleashed on the world in October.
