The United States is not planning to give up its status as the best basketball nation in the world, installing a powerhouse cast that will face off with other hoop-loving nations at the World Basketball Championship, KPop Starz reported.
With the FIBA World Cup in Spain six weeks away, USA Today said Team USA will begin its defense of the World Basketball Championship, with a training camp roster announced on Monday. A total of 19 players will be in Las Vegas from July 28 to August 1, scheduled for streamlining to a final roster of 12.
The report noted that the prospects for the national basketball team had a "gold standard," subscribing to the expertise of the managing director, Jerry Colangelo, and coach, Mike Krzyzewski, who led Team USA to first-place finishes in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, and 2010 FIBA World Cup. If the team brings home the gold at the World Cup, they'll qualify for the 2016 Olympics.
Assistant coaches are Jim Boeheim, Tom Thibodeau and Monty Williams, the NBA.com said, adding that all the players in the list have prior USA Basketball experience.
The report added that the invitees include the following previously named members: Bradley Beal (Washington Wizards); DeMarcus Cousins (Sacramento Kings); Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors); Anthony Davis (New Orleans Pelicans); Andre Drummond (Detroit Pistons); Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder); Kenneth Faried (Denver Nuggets); Paul George (Indiana Pacers); Blake Griffin (Los Angeles Clippers);James Harden (Houston Rockets); Gordon Hayward (Utah Jazz); Kyrie Irving (Cleveland Cavaliers); Kyle Korver (Atlanta Hawks); Damian Lillard (Portland Trail Blazers); Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves); Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls); and Klay Thompson (Golden State Warriors). National league standouts DeMar DeRozan (Toronto Raptors) and Chandler Parsons (Dallas Mavericks) join them as newbies.
"The Las Vegas training camp will be the start of our preparations for the World Cup... This USA team will have a special opportunity to become the first USA team to repeat as world champions," Colangelo said, as quoted by the report. "This group possesses outstanding individual talents, while also boasting of excellent versatility and varying amounts of USA Basketball experience."
USA Today said Kevin Durant is geared to lead the group after a record of 153 total points at the Olympics in 2012.
There were 28 players in the list of prospects in January, USA Today added, but many, including LeBron James and Dwight Howard, chose not to participate. Some stars have opted out because of injuries or personal reasons, Kpop Starz noted.
John Wall was reportedly a glaring exclusion in the mix. Kawhi Leonard is another puzzling exlusion, CBS Sports said, noting that he should have been the wing of choice. It's also not as filled with superstar athletes as previous lineups.
The team is shooting-heavy, though. And that's something to look forward to. USA plays Finland on Aug. 30 and Turkey on Aug. 31, a rematch of the 2010 FIBA World Championship final, the NBA.com reported.
