The Samsung Galaxy Mega was released last year and featured a two-model line, one Mega 6.3 and another a slightly smaller 5.8-inch device.
A year after it was first launched, the possible changes and feature modifications for the next-generation "Godzilla" smartphone are powering the rumor mill.
When it comes to smartphones, size matters. In the past, people were trying to make the devices smaller and slimmer. Now, the new trend is go big or go home! With the Samsung Galaxy Mega, consumers with a preference for larger screens have found their home.
According to the newest insider leaks on the Samsung Galaxy Mega 2, PCadvisor reported that the Mega 2 was spotted on GFXBench 3.0 which listed the successor device as featuring a 5.9-inch display, a mid-range size between the two original models.
However, the site writes, "the leaked image for the Galaxy Mega 2 supposedly has a tablet sized 7in screen."
The site listed specs for the device including a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 310 processor chip, Android 4.4.3 KitKat OS, 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 306 GPU. Storage is pegged at 8GB (sans pre-loaded software) with basic connectivity features. In terms of graphics, it's expected to sport a 12 MP rear camera 4.7 MP front clicker with full HD features.
Mashable notes that if the reports are to be believed, this larger model will surpass its predecessor by 9.7 inches and will effectively be named the new king of large Android smartphones.
Rumors say the Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 has already passed through the FCC. The device filed with model number SM-T2558 has passed the FCC hurdle, indicating a release is in the horizon.
The Samsung Galaxy Mega is Samsung's most popular smartphone/tablet hybrid. The phone is said to be the more affordable version of the highly-popular flagship Galaxy S5 and the Note 4. Its design and feel are patterned after the two, giving the indication that Samsung is targeting the mid-range consumers looking to save a bit more money.
To date, there is no word on the release date or price of the device but it should launch this 3rd quarter, if the previous timeline is to be followed.
To give an idea of the price point for the device, the original Mega was sold just under $500, without a contract.
