In a Wimbledon finals that reached the fifth set, Roger Federer failed to win against Novak Djokovic despite the former being able to save one match point and winning four games in a row during the fourth set.
Swiss star player Federer failed to grab the fifth set of the four-hour game which could have been his eighth Wimbledon title. Serbian player Djokovic outclassed his opponent with a 6-7 (7), 6-4, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-4 victory on Sunday, SF Gate reported.
"In a match like the one today, where I needed support, they were there. I could sense that they really wished me well and hoped for me to either get back in the match or hopefully lift another trophy here at Wimbledon," Federer told SF Gate in an interview after the game. He added that he already has seven titles and that it's not like he needs another one.
SF Gate also noted that had Federer won the game, he could have been the oldest man in more than half a century to win the tournament.
Last year, the player also had his earliest exit in the Wimbledon since 2002, when he got eliminated during the second round.
For his part, Djokovic said that he respects Federer, his career and achievements.
"He's a great champion on and off the court. To be able to win against him, as one of my greatest rivals, on this occasion, on a court that he's been dominating for so many years, makes it a very special trophy for me," he told SF Gate.
Djokovic's coach Boris Becker also noted that the Wimbledon finals match was the best game he has seen Roger played in years. Becker is a three-time Wimbledon champion, SF Gate noted.
For the women's finals, Eugenie Bouchard also lost to Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic; a loss which according to experts, had cost her millions in sponsorhip earnings.
The Canadian tennis star, according to National Post, could have sealed numerous seven-figure deals if she won in the finals.
"Champions [project] hard work, humility, perseverance, and those are all qualities and attributes other brands like to associate with," said Vijay Setlur, a sports marketing professor at York University, in an interview with National Post. Cosmo Sports president and owner Cary Kaplan believes that Bouchard needs a championship to "catapult" her earnings, the National Post added.
Bouchard has not yet won a Grand Slam title though she has reached two semi-finals and also won the 2012 Wimbledon Junior competition.
Kvitova defeated Bouchard with a 3-6, 0-6 win during the finals game on Saturday. Despite her loss, National Post reported that Bouchard is still expected to earn $1.6 million for her runner-up finish in the Wimbledon.
University of Toronto sports marketing professor Richard Powers, however explained that despite the loss, Bouchard can still boost her earnings through future contracts.
"She has the potential to win and she wants to win, and she's not content at being runner-up," Powers told National Sports.
It was also reported that Bouchard can still boost her earnings during the upcoming U.S. Open.
