"X-Men: Days of Future Past" director Bryan Singer wants to clear his name as he files for a motion to dismiss a sexual abuse case filed by an unnamed British actor in May this year.
According to Variety, on Thursday, the legal team of Singer has filed a counter-motion demanding $300,000 to cover incurred and anticipated litigation costs from the plaintiff who hides by the name of "John Doe 117."
The case claims that "John Doe 117" was abused by Singer, 38, when he was a teenager. Variety adds that the British actor is being represented by Jeffrey Herman, the same lawyer who is representing Michael Egan who has also accused Singer along with three other Hollywood executives of sexual abuse when Egan was a teenager.
The case filed by Egan in Hawaii alleges that Singer "manipulated his power" to exploit him, who was 17 at the time of the alleged abuse, writes The Wrap. Egan claims that Singer, along with David Neuman, Garth Ancier and Gary Goddard ran a Hollywood sex-abuse ring in estates in Hawaii and Los Angeles. Aspiring actors were allegedly threatened to have their acting careers destroyed if they were not satisfied or kept happy.
Statements by Singer's lawyer said the suits were "completely without merit."
"We are very confident that Bryan will be vindicated in this absurd and defamatory lawsuit," said Martin Singer, legal rep of the famed director, was quoted as saying by The Wrap. "It is obvious that this case was filed in an attempt to get publicity at the time when Bryan' s new movie is about to open in a few weeks."
According to MSN.com, "Egan also sued Goddard, and fellow entertainment executive David Neuman and Garth Ancier, but those suits have been dismissed." Additionally, Ancier is counter-suing Egan.
Singer has been mostly mum on the topic, letting his lawyers speak for him. But, in April, he issued an official statement that said,"The allegations against me are outrageous, vicious and completely false."
According to Variety, Singer's fellow defendant in the Doe suit, Gary Goddard, has already filed for his own motion to dismiss the case last month and a hearing on the motions put forth has been scheduled on August 18.
Singer's latest film, "X-Men: Days of Future Past" was a box office success, grossing $715 million worldwide within five weeks of release.
