Eating cocoa-rich dark chocolate is known to have health benefits but a recent study in Italy reveals the delicious treat has much more to offer.

A small study, involving 20 participants, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association concludes that in Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) patients, dark, not milk chocolate acutely improves walking autonomy.

PAD is a painful condition where arteries narrow making blood circulation to extremities being very painful

The study's method included two groups: one group received 40 grams (about 1.5 ounces) of dark chocolate that had at least 85 percent cocoa while the other half got the same amount of milk chocolate which has less than 30 percent cocoa, wrote Free Republic

The researchers sought to observe whether dark or milk chocolate would be able to improve those patients' ability to walk without assistance on a treadmill.

MedicalPageToday.com writes that the effects of the dark chocolate was modest, showing an 11 per cent increase in walking amounts over those who consumed equal amounts of milk chocolate.

Dr. Lorenzo Loffredo, the study's lead author, explains that the nutrients, a component called polyphenols found in dark chocolate is the key for the health impact. NPR.org noted that: "The researchers say the polyphenols in dark chocolate can help reduce oxidative stress and help the body form more nitric oxide, a compound that causes blood vessels to dilate."

While the study provides an insight on the potential benefits of dark chocolate and the future of antioxidant treatments, many scientists indicate that further studies are necessary, especially a larger respondent base, to see the true impact of the substance.

Dark chocolate is filled with nutrients that can boost one's health and wellness and has been noted to be one of the most abundant source of antioxidants. FitToday.com reports that dark chocolate is very nutritious and contains soluble fiber along with other minerals. It has been attributed to improve blood flow as well as lower blood pressure.

Given these benefits, moderate intake of chocolates can lower the risk of heart disease due to its ability to decrease oxidized LDL cholesterol, especially in men. It also has dermatological benefits including sun protection for the skin and improved brain functioning for a higher level of cognitive abilities.
