"Sherlock" fans are in for a treat. According to Martin Freeman who plays Doctor John Watson in the show, "Sherlock: will be back on BBC one for a 2015 Christmas special. While it might take a while, fans now have something to look forward to.
"I'm speaking off-message here; if this was New Labour I'd get fired - I think that might be for next Christmas. A Christmas special. That's what I understand," said Freeman to The Telegraph.
Daily Mail notes that production and filming is expected to begin by early next year The actors are swamped with various projects and have on-going acting gigs this 2014. Many reporters analyzed that a 2014 feature was highly unlikely given the number of other projects the actors have taken on. The show has catapulted the careers of Benedict Cumberbatch (Holmes) and Freeman (Watson). Freeman was involved in "The Hobbit" films as Bilbo Baggins while Cumberbatch was in the Oscar-winning "12 Years A Slave" project.
According to BleedingCool.com: "Notice how the last episode was set at Christmas? Well, it wouldn't be unlike a Christmas special to take over the festive period, would it? And it wouldn't be unlike Moffat and Gatiss to write a story that continued on directly from the last one."
For those who don't follow the BBC series, "Sherlock" is a contemporary take on the adventures of the famous consulting detective and his doctor partner as they solve crimes in London during the 21st century.
KGR Vissers summarizes the show: "In this modernized version of the Conan Doyle characters, using his detective plots, Sherlock Holmes lives in early 21st century London and acts more cocky towards Scotland Yard's detective inspector Lestrade because he's actually less confident. Doctor Watson is now a fairly young veteran of the Afghan war, less adoring and more active."
Telegraph also noted that Freeman's real-life wife Amanda Abbington will reprise her role as the actor's on-screen romance.
Now, fans don't be down if for now, this particular news is all about a "Sherlock" Christmas special. The statement doesn't mean a fourth season will never happen -- it just means it isn't the immediate move for the series.
