Over the next few days, hundreds of undocumented immigrant families that have been found crossing the border from Mexico into Texas will be shipped from detention centers in California.
The move, meant to alleviate overcrowding in south Texas detention centers, will focus on the relocation of adults with children. These families will make the trek from the Rio Grande Valley to Border Patrol stations in Imperial Valley and San Diego.
The families, most of whom come from Central American countries -- Guatemala, Honduras, or El Salvador -- are also expected to be moved within Texas, from the Rio Grande Valley to El Paso or Laredo.
These areas of California and Texas are not seeing the same spike in numbers that the Rio Grande Valley is, and the smaller caseloads of these centers will allow for quicker processing.
Once the families arrive, interviews with Border Patrol agents will be conducted before any further decisions will take place. They will then be handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), who will take steps to decide which families are appropriate for immediate removal from the U.S., as well as what families have legitimate cases to be heard for asylum.
According to a statement from Michael Friel, a spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, "The movement will allow the U.S. Border Patrol in less congested areas to assist in processing family units from South Texas where we are seeing an influx of migrants crossing the border."
This move was slated to begin on Monday, but protests from lawmakers in California and a lack of appropriate detention centers in which to move the families has delayed the transfer.
A record number of unaccompanied youth and families are making their way across the border from Central American countries. Over 50,000 unaccompanied children have been caught crossing the border from Mexico this year alone, which is double what was seen over the last year.
The United States has declared the issue of undocumented children traveling into America alone a "humanitarian crisis," and the Obama administration is actively looking for ways to address the influx of immigrants into the U.S. from Central America.
While the move may help alleviate some of the crushing crowds in the south Texas detention centers, not everyone is happy with the change.
Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Corona) has demanded that the impending move be halted immediately.
"Instead of solving the immigration problems along our border in Texas, President Obama has decided to spread that problem into communities in my congressional district and throughout Southern California," Calvert said in a statement.
