After returning from a back injury that prevented him from playing for more than three months, the American golfer is now back at the PGA Tour, but not to his usual playing self. 

Woods, according to Fox Sports, made two straight bogeys during his opening and committed five more throughout the Quicken Loans National game.

It was noted in the Fox Sports report that only four players had a higher score than him but said that he should do better on his next game Friday to make the cut.

''I made so many little mistakes. So I played a lot better than the score indicated,'' he said in an interview with Fox Sports.

The professional and seasoned golfer seemed to look the way he did before giving away shots with his short game and some ordinary chips, Fox Sports reported.

In a separate interview with Washington Post, Woods said that he was able to play with a great group but noted that they were not able to see each other on the front nine. "We were all kind of looking to break 80," said Woods, grinning sheepishly because all three sprayed their way to 4-over-par 39s on their first nine holes."

The Post reported that Woods' mistakes were so basic bordering comical that it was impossible not to notice and even prompted the same report to question if he can still make the cut based from his performance.

But in his defense, Woods said that the score does not indicate how well he played.

"I had four up-and-downs right there on 15 through 18 [his sixth-through-ninth holes] and didn't make any of them. I had an easy pitch on No. 2. Didn't get that up-and-down. Had a wedge in my hand on 3, and I jerk it in the bunker. I made so many little mistakes. So I played a lot better than the score indicated," he explained.

As for his back, Woods said that he felt fantastic without issues and twinges. 

"It felt fantastic. That's one of the reasons why I let go on those tee shots. I hit it pretty hard out there,'' he noted. Woods last played on March 9 at Doral when he was already hurting from a back pain. Later that month, he underwent surgery for his back that caused him to miss the Masters and the U.S. Open.

Aside from Woods, other players who also performed well during the first round of the tournament are Greg Chalmers who finished with three straight birdies for a 66, Erik Compton and Patrick Reed.
