#Suarez was the hashtag for a social media firestorm that swept Twitter after Luis Suarez allegedly sank his infamous teeth into the shoulder of the opposing team's defender--an incident that arguably earned more headway than the 1-0 victory that eliminated Italy from the World Cup's Round of 16.
Suarez clashed with Italy's Giorgio Chiellini, leaning his head toward his opponent's shoulder, as shown in a footage on the Daily Mail. Both players fell to the ground afterward with Suarez clutching his teeth as Chiellini gesticulated furiously.
The brief clash came in the final 12 minutes of a tense decisive match in the sweltering Arena das Dunas in Natal, Brazil, with both teams fighting for the right to move on to the next round and still tied at nil.
Luis Suarez's reputation again lies in tatters, a separate Daily Mail report said, with the incident adding to a seven-game ban in 2010 for biting PSV Eindhoven's Otman Bakkal and spending ten games on the sidelines in Liverpool after biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.
Suarez and his club manager Brendan Rodgers have previously claimed that the Uruguayan has changed his ways, said the same report, but this could mean all the hard work was for naught. It doesn't help that the New York Times implied that Luis Suarez is a class that uses his teeth instead of the usual limbs in the rough and tumble.
The heat continued off the grass, with Chiellini asking why the misdemeanor was not issued at least a yellow card even as he showed the bitemarks. "It is clear, clear-cut and then there was the obvious dive afterwards because he knew very well that he did something that he shouldn't have done."
He also told Sky Sports Italia that Suarez was "a sneak" who "gets away with it because FIFA want their stars to play in the World Cup."
The Guardian quoted Jim Boyce, FIFA vice president, as saying: "There is no doubt Luis Suarez is a fantastic footballer but ... his actions have left him open to severe criticism." FIFA can suspend a player for a maximum of 24 matches, said the report.
The player denied the accussation. "I had contact with his shoulder, chest against shoulder and I got a knock to the eye--nothing more," he said as quoted by the same report. He has the Uruguayan team in his defense, with nonplaying captain Diego Lugano accusing Chiellini of being a cry baby and óscar Tabárez, the Uruguay manager, accusing some media practitioners for erring.
Italy needed a draw to advance to the knock-out stages, while Uruguay needed a win to reach the Top 16. The latter went on to win the game with a goal from captain Diego Godin just after the incident in question. Watch the alleged biting incident in the video below.
