Wimbledon finished off its first day with a great start from both men and women tennis players with Andy Murray and Serena Williams advancing to the next round.
It was an easy tak for Murray going against Belgian's top contender David Goffin as the Scottish player ended the game with a 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 victory. AL.com reported that despite a late uprising from his opponent, Murray was still able to survive the game and move on to the next round.
He is expected to face in the semifinals Novak Djokovic who easily won his first 11 games against Andrey Golubev, according to AL.com.
Italy's Fabio Fognini also emerged victorious despite a difficult five-set match against American Alex Kuznetsov.
For the women's division, American Sloane Stephens became an "early casualty" of the first round as she lost to Russia's Maria Kirilenko. According to AL.com Stephens did not gain her footing even as she drove it to a tiebreak.
World No. 2 Li Na, on the other hand, had an easy battle with Paula Kania beating the latter in two sets. Venus Williams also defeated Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor in three sets while sister Serena according to Bleacher Report is set to take on Anna Tatishvili in Tuesday's opening round. The report noted that Williams' opponent is a strong player but that the American athlete is expected to show another great performance that will earn her another Wimbledon championship.
For the men's division, No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal will go against Slovak player Martin Kližan in a first-round matchup. Bleacher Report noted that Nadal, like Williams, should move past his first opponent without "breaking much of a sweat."
In an interview with ATPWorldTour.com, Nadal said that he is not looking far ahead for now and that he wants to focus first on his first match.
"I don't see farther than today. I have a tough first round against Klizan. For the last two years I lost in the first and second round... I start from the first round in every surface. You can imagine even more here on grass," he added in the interview.
He also explained that things are getting a lot better for him now, explaining that despite his less number of matches on the grass, he can still win in this tournament.
