Mexico is looking for an opening match takedown of fellow Group A adversary Cameroon. The match gets underway at the Estadio de Dunas in Natal on Friday, June 13 at 12:00 p.m. EDT. Watch the live online streaming for this match at WatchESPN or WatchABC. TV coverage of the World Cup is found on the ESPN Networks.
For Mexico, to have any shot at making it out of Group A alive they must defeat Cameroon when they have the opportunity. Brazil is the heavily favored top dog, so "El Tri" need not concern themselves with chasing the top spot. What is necessary however is to take full advantage of the lesser teams they will face. With a win versus Cameroon and Croatia losing to Brazil, El Tri will be in an ideal position to move on to the next round.
Too often teams get caught up with looking at the big picture. Mexico manager Miguel Herrera has already said that Mexico will probably not win the World Cup. This kind of attitude is cancerous to a team because it takes the focus off of the current match and looks broadly at all the teams El Tri will have to go through.
When staying focused on the current team, El Tri sees in Cameroon a team that is in shambles. It was reported earlier this week that Cameroon players refused to board the plane bound for Brazil because of financial issues. The team's General Manager had to take out a loan just so the players could be paid.
These incidents all act as distractions, so a focused Mexico team could take advantage out of Cameroon's weakness. El Tri has had a difficult trip through the qualifiers and even their 1-0 loss to a Portugal team missing their captain. These can either be looked at as negatives or flipped around to show perseverance. Through it all El Tri is in the 'big dance' and now its time to make some moves.
It has been reported by ESPN and FOX that Herrera has elected to start Ochoa at goalkeeper rather than Jesus Corona. Ochoa has sat on the bench the past two World Cups but now he is poised to show off his keep.
Ochoa may be able to deliver his shot stopping abilities but Mexico's biggest weakness seems to be it's scoring. Chicharito has been removed from the starting lineup due to his poor play as of late.
Overall Mexico is predicted to score a 2-1 victory over Cameroon. Hopefully they will be able to ride the momentum into their next match versus the home nation of Brazil.
