It was an emotional win for Rafael Nadal at the French Open championship on Sunday.
The Spanish tennis player went down on his knees and shed tears of victory after his match against rival Novak Djokovic that earned Nadal his ninth French Open chamionship and a fifth consecutive title.
The two equally talented fighters went head-to-head in a battle that tested their ability to stand the extreme heat of the sun and critical rallies all throughout the match.
The Washington Post reported that the Serbian fighter gave the final point to his opponent with a double-fault that ended the game with 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 and 6-4 results, favoring Nadal.
The 28-year-old Nadal proved to the whole tennis world that he is worthy of his No. 1 world ranking in the list of Grand Slam titles.
He outshined the No. 2 Djokovic who got "drained" with the conditions of the fight and failed to show Nadal's weakness during the fight, the Washington Post reported.
In an interview, Nadal said the it is always a challenge for him to go against Djokovic, noting "I'm sure you will win here in the future, I don't have any doubt about that."
Djokovic went teary-eyed as well after Sunday's match, but acknowledged the prowess shown by his opponent. The Washington Post quoted him as saying "I gave my best. All my strength. All my capability and effort. But Rafa was the best today."
The two players traded breaks during the game and showed their capacity to take attacks from one another.
The 80-degree temperature on Sunday was also a big factor during the game, and something that, according to the Washington Post, favored Nadal's topspin strokes.
Djokovic shared that it was "very, very difficult" to stay with Nadal during the match because of his high level of performance and admitted that he lost coordination with his serves and attacks.
In a review of the game, the Washington Post noted that Nadal plays more "by feel than tactics."
He told the media outlet in a post-game interview that he will see how many Grand Slams he will get in his career as a tennis player. "Today, that is not the important thing," he was quoted as saying.
The French Open titleholder noted he just wants to feel and enjoy the moment because he worked hard for it. But he also noted that these moments do not last forever and recognized the fact that he might not be given the opportunity to do it again.
A Yahoo Sports report mentioned that Nadal was still in tears during the most part of the awarding ceremony. Yahoo also noted that Djokovic was also moved by the crowd chanting his name.
"The trophy is not for us this year but we will return in the coming years with the hope of winning it one day," he told Yahoo Sports.
