The Denver man who allegedly shot his wife to death while she was on the phone with 911 Monday night reportedly consumed marijuana candy and prescription drugs earlier that day.
According to CBS News' Crimesider, 47-year-old Richard Kirk shot his wife Kristine Kirk in the head while she was on the phone with 911 to report his erratic behavior. Authorities say that Kirk bought marijuana-infused candy and a pre-rolled marijuana cigarrette and took back pain medication just hours before the shooting on April 14.
Around 9:30 p.m. that night, the victim called the police department and told the 911 operator that her husband "had taken some marijuana and possibly some prescription medication for back pain" and was hallucinating. She added that he was scaring their three young children and "talking about the end of the world and [saying] he wanted her to shoot him."
Initially, police say that Kirk's call was non-life threatening and that she requested medical help for her husband, whom she said was scaring the couple's three small children. However, the man then apparently got a gun out of their safe and shot her.
According to a police affidavit, 12 minutes into the call, the sound of "an apparent gunshot" was heard and "the victim was not heard on the call again."
The officers who arrested Richard Kirk said that he was "rambling to himself" in the back of the patrol car and said that he is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, reports USA Today. Authorities also say that he confessed to the murder.
Police documents say that Richard Kirk "appeared to be under the influence of some type of controlled substance and/or prescription pills based upon his speech patterns, his inability to focus and his pupils."
Investigators found a receipt and a package for the candy in the family home, in addition to evidence that he bought a Pre 98 Bubba Kush Pre-Roll, a pre-rolled joint, that same day.
The suspect is currently in jail without bond on first-degree murder charges.
