The New England Patriots are expected to be very active on the trade front in the upcoming 2014 National Football League (NFL) Draft as reports indicate that coach Bill Belichick will be wheeling and dealing in May.
The Boston Herald reported that Belichick is leaning towards keeping their 29th overall pick, but he is also not ruling out moving up or trading down in the draft much like the Patriots did last year.
Belichick managed to acquire four draft picks for their No. 29 overall selection last year, dealing their first-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings, who then drafted wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson out of the University of Tennessee.
The deal turned out to be a good one for the Patriots as they were able to draft linebacker Jamie Collins out of the University of Southern Mississippi in the second round, cornerback Logan Ryan out of Rutgers University in the third round, wide receiver Josh Boyce out of Texas Christian University (TCU) in the fourth round, and a seventh-round pick that was traded to Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the deal involving RB LeGarrette Blount.
Belichick will likely look for a similar deal for the team's first-round pick, but it remains to be seen whether or not teams will be interested in giving away four picks for the Patriots' 29th pick.
NFL analyst Gil Brandt is not ruling out such deal, but he pointed out that it depends on whether or not the top quarterbacks in the draft will still be available for that No. 29 pick.
"There's a lot of scenarios I think might happen. I think one of the scenarios you might see, are people in the second round, trying to get up in the first round to take a quarterback," Brandt said to the Boston Herald. "I think that's a scenario that could happen. I think a player you get between 25 and 40, is about the same player."
According to the report, the Jacksonville Jaguars, who hold 11 picks, and the Atlanta Falcons, who have 10 picks, are the most likely trade partners for the Patriots.
The Patriots could also decide to use their pick if one of their targets is still on the board. Sources said that the Patriots will likely stay put in the draft if University of Notre Dame nose tackle Louis Nix is still available when they make their selection at No. 29.
