The Boston Celtics will miss the playoffs for the first time since the 2006-07 season, and their tumultuous year could be attributed to the roster shakeup they made in the offseason.

The Celtics, who traded veterans Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett in the offseason, are currently in rebuilding mode, but reports indicate that the team will look to become contenders again next season.

Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said in an interview on Thursday that he will look to make big moves this summer.

Ainge quickly added, though, that he will be very careful with his decision-making, saying that he will not strike deals just to make fans believe that the team's front office is doing their best to make the team competitive again.

"I'm going to try to blow off some fireworks, but I have to be patient as well and we have to make sure that we don't do deals just to do deals," Ainge said, via ESPN.

While the 55-year-old Hall of Famer said that making deals is harder than it sounds, he pointed out that they will have a busy summer this year because there are several directions that they can choose.

One of the most talked about moves that they could make this offseason is trading superstar point guard Rajon Rondo, who has been drawing the interest of several teams since returning from a long layoff due to an ACL injury.

Ainge has been vocal about his intention to build the team around Rondo, but the Boston Globe reported that the Celtics could still move the veteran playmaker, considering the fact that there are promising point guards, who have declared for the 2014 NBA Draft.

"With the draft littered with quality point guards, the Celtics could easily choose to go in another direction and attempt to trade Rondo," The Boston Globe noted.

Rondo, who is averaging 11.8 points and 9.7 assists per game this season, is also unsure whether or not he will still be with the Celtics next season. Anything can happen in the offseason, Rondo said.

"You can [see the progress] but then again, who will be here next year?" Rondo said. "You [the reporter] might not even be here. They might trade you this season. It depends. I think there are some things you can take from this team."
