It takes a lot to surprise New Yorkers, but there's one thing that can always make a subway car full of riders nervously jump out of their seats—rats.

On Monday morning, a number of subway passengers were apparently terrified by a rat who snuck onto the A train in Manhattan. In a YouTube video that has already garnered over 1.3 million views, the riders can be seen and heard letting out horrified screams as the rodent paced back and forth underneath their seats. While a few people remained seated and lifted up their legs, most passengers stood up on their seats and began to cry and panic.

The rat reportedly boarded the downtown A train at the Fulton street station during the early rush hour commute. That's when one rider, Jinais Ponnampadikkal Kader, decided to whip out his cellphone to record the incident.

"Shut up!" one woman said in despair in response to an MTA intercom announcement that reminded passengers to "remain alert and have a safe day" in the video.

"I heard someone shouting 'RAT on the train!'" Ponnampadikkal Kader told The New York Daily News. "But by the time everyone we understood what was happening, the doors closed and the train entered the tunnel. We were stuck with him till the other end."

Ponnampadikkal Kader, who said he wasn't fazed by the rat, said that he was surprised by everyone else's reactions.

"Everyone was so scared, even the men were climbing on top of chairs," the 28-year-old software developer from Harrison, N.J. said. "Usually the Monday morning ride is really boring, but this brightened it up."

The video ends when Ponnampadikkal Kader rushes out of the train at the High Street station, while half of the people who were in the car followed him.
