A North Carolina man who was reported missing from his home days ago was rescued Wednesday from an apartment complex in Atlanta, Ga.
The FBI said Frank Arthur Janssen was the target of a kidnapping plot, the Associated Press reports. Janssen was rescued around midnight Wednesday by the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team.
Residents of the apartment complex said Thursday that they heard a loud boom, then found two mangled doors lying in a courtyard area in front of one of the town homes. They later learned that the rescue team busted through the home's doors to rescue Janssen.
Residents could see a washer, dryer and a kitchen through the space where the door had been.
Moments after the sun rose, three officers in body armor left the complex in SUVs, but several federal agents remained at the complex.
Janssen was reported missing April 5 from his home in Wake Forest, N.C., the FBI reports. There was no answer at his home Thursday, which is located in a quiet, upscale neighborhood.
The FBI and Wake Forest police determined that Janssen had been the victim of a kidnapping, and was being held in an apartment complex in Atlanta's southeast area.
Janssen's family was notified of his rescue after the team freed him at around 11:55 p.m. Wednesday.
The FBI did not release more details about the kidnapping, and said that it is an "active and ongoing" investigation.
FBI spokesperson Shelley Lynch told reporters by phone early Thursday that she does not have additional information to release on how the rescue was executed, what the kidnapping motive could have been, or whether anyone had been hurt in the rescue. She said a news conference is planned for Thursday in Wake Forest.
However, NPR now reports that the man could have been kidnapped because of his daughter's work prosecuting drug and gang cases. Janssen's daughter is an assistant district attorney in North Carolina.
A federal law enforcement official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the kidnapping may have been an act of retaliation after discovering ransom communications that suggested that those involved were linked to the gang The Bloods.
