Marcos Maidana will be a heavy underdog in his upcoming fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., but his trainer, Robert Garcia, is confident about their chances in the May 3 showdown.

In a recent interview with BoxingScene, Garcia said that Mayweather has faced great boxers before, but none of them had the style similar to that of Maidana.

"Mayweather has never fought an opponent like Maidana," Garcia said. "He's had good opponents. Miguel Cotto, Oscar de la Hoya, Canelo Alvarez, but not one of them has the style of Chino, which is difficult because of the way he punches."

Garcia added that defeating Mayweather will be easier said than done. The reigning pound-for-pound king went undefeated in his first 45 fights, but Garcia and Maidana are unfazed.

The 2012 Trainer of the Year reiterated his previous statement, saying that even the best will eventually suffer setbacks at some point in their careers, citing Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard as examples.

Garcia said that Ali and Leonard were dealt defeats not because their opponents were better than them, but because the fighters who defeated them had styles that were well-suited for both of them.

"Ali is the best ever and he's had defeats, Sugar Ray Leonard lost, so it is not impossible," Garcia said of fighting Mayweather. "It is the styles that make fights. Duran beat Leonard because of his style, not because he was better than him, and the style of Chino is perfect to get an upset. It won't be easy, but we have the desire and work ethic."

Maidana, who is coming off a scintillating unanimous decision win over Adrien Broner in their WBA welterweight title showdown in December, also expects a tough fight, but he is confident that he will pull off a monumental upset.

The 30-year-old Argentinian vowed to train hard, knowing that he needs to have a perfect fight plan—even better than what he had during the Broner fight—if he wants to hand Mayweather his first defeat.

"I'm focused on improving everything so we have more chances to win," Maidana said. "I also know that I cannot measure my chances by what happened with Broner, because Mayweather is much better than that. Everyone, at some point in life, we ​​have to lose - and it's time for him to lose."
