English Premier League superpower Chelsea is reportedly trying to further improve their roster by adding Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero with a British record-breaking transfer fee, a source close to situation reported on Saturday.
According to Football Direct News, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is expected to exhaust all options in an attempt to land the Manchester City FC forward when the transfer window re-opens in the coming weeks. Chelsea is in contention for the English Premier League championship, and adding another excellent striker to the lineup would give them a great shot at dominating the league next season.
"While there has been no encouragement from [Manchester] City, boss Jose Mourinho has made it clear that he urgently needs at least one world class forward this summer, and the source says the Argentina international is top of the wish list," Football Direct News reported.
With Barcelona trying to contest the one-year transfer ban the team received from FIFA, Chelsea will capitalize on the opportunity by preparing an offer for several elite strikers available this coming offseason. One of those is Aguero, who has transformed into a top-notch goal scorer since his move to Etihad Stadium from Spain's La Liga Atletico Madrid in 2011.
The 25-year-old Aguero is locked down by Manchester City for three more years after signing a 12-month extension deal despite receiving offers from La Liga's Barcelona FC. Chelsea, which already expressed interest in Aguero at that time, is reportedly willing to go the extra mile by paying more than the amount of money they spent (£50 million/$82.89 million USD) for the acquisition of Fernando Torres from Liverpool few years ago.
Aguero has been inactive since Manchester City fell to Barcelona 2-1 in their UEFA Champions League showdown on March 12 because of a hamstring strain injury. However, the striker is expected to make his return on the field soon. Aguero has scored 73 goals in his last 113 appearances in all competitions.
