A 54-year-old man was in left in critical condition Thursday after a neighborhood mob on the east side of Detroit brutally beat him when he stopped to help a boy he struck with his pickup truck.
The suburban driver, who was identified by relatives as Steve Utash, suffered from severe head injuries after the mob beat and kicked him Wednesday afternoon, reports the Associated Press. The beating occurred after 10-year-old David Harris stepped in front of his pickup. When Utash stopped to check on the boy, he was attacked by at least a half-dozen people, said a witness.
David was expected to recover from his injuries, according to the boy's uncle Desmond Key, 21.
Detroit police Sgt. Michael Woody says the driver, who lives north of Detroit in Macomb County's Rosevill, wasn't at fault in the accident. "A preliminary investigation shows the kid stepped off the curb in front of him," Woody said, reports Fox News. "No way he could have stopped in time."
No arrests were made in connection with the beating. "At this time, he is not a suspect" in the attack, Woody said.
Key said David and his friends were walking to a store from their homes when the boy was hit by the truck. One of the youngsters raced back to David's home to notify the family about the accident.
"I heard that he ran out in the street," Key said. "When I showed up my nephew was on the ground screaming."
In the mean time, the driver was getting thrashed in the driveway of a nearby gas station.
"The guy definitely was trying to fight back, but it was too many guys," Key said. "When he finally had enough of trying to fight back he just fell to the ground. When he fell to the ground they kicked him a couple of times and then they left him alone."
He added that he saw six or seven attackers.
"We don't know those people that did that to that guy. Our main focus is on David," he said. "We weren't cheering it on. We weren't rooting for it."
