Former boxing champion Ricky Hatton believes that Amir Khan will have a "horrible fight" against Luis Collazo on the main undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana showdown on May 3 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
In a recent interview with the Mancunian Matters, Hatton questioned Khan's decision to face Collazo. Hatton said that he knows Khan is itching to prove his doubters wrong, but he added that Khan could have chosen another opponent instead of Collazo.
"I just think it's a horrible fight for Amir. There are easier fights he could have had, but that's why we love him," Hatton said.
Hatton, who scored a unanimous decision win against Collazo in 2006, is expecting a tough night for Khan, but he quickly added that the Bolton, England native has the tools to defeat Collazo.
However, Hatton insisted that Khan should be disciplined and avoid committing the same mistakes that he made when he lost to Lamont Peterson in December 2011, and Danny Garcia in July 2012.
"If his team thinks he will go to war like he has done in the past, it's going to be a very, very tough night for him," Hatton said. "He's going to have to be disciplined. If he uses his speed and boxing ability I think he will win. But if he goes to war, which is what he tends to do, he's got a big heart and he likes to get stuck in, he could come a cropper."
Khan, who has not fought since scoring a unanimous decision win against Julio Diaz in April last year, is looking to earn a big money fight against Mayweather later this year.
By picking a tough opponent in his next fight, Hatton said that Mayweather will have no reason to deny Khan a shot if he ends up defeating the 32-year-old Collazo.
"He would have proven he deserves the shot then," Hatton said. "100 percent I give Amir credit for taking the fight. Collazo's a southpaw, he's big, he's fast, he's just beaten Victor Ortiz in two rounds - a great win - and I'm a bit shell-shocked."
