The Texas abortion bill which bans abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy has drawn the attention of Texan women and women from around the world.

Although democrats and activists have rallied side by side in order to stop the bill from being passed, the reason for doing so is not because of the abortion ban after 20 weeks but more because of the bill's stricter laws with regards to legal abortion clinics. Sources say that the passage of the bill will reduce the number of legal abortion clinics from 47 to 5 - ultimately driving women to flea market abortions.

Along with various merchandise and other products, the flea market otherwise referred to as the bazaar outside McAllen, Texas just a short distance from the Mexican border serves as the black market for abortion drugs.

Although these drugs are not displayed outright, interviews with local residents revealed that "all you need to do is ask." The most common drug sold in this open-air flea market is a brand named Cytotec, a drug commonly used to prevent stomach ulcers. Abortion drugs can also be obtained at pharmacies in Mexican towns which sell Cytotec and its generic version, Misoprostol without the need for prescription. Side effects of taking these drugs include premature birth and uterine rupture.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Erlinda Dasquez, a 29-year old mother of four shared her experience in trying to secure drugs for abortion outside of a legal abortion clinic. Since the drug was not available in the flea market by the time she needed them, she met up with a woman who smuggled the drug across the border to sell.

Dasquez had to pay the woman $40 for four octagonal pills - a fraction of a cost compared to the the $550 pharmaceutical abortion cost at the nearest legal abortion clinic. "I was scared, but I thought I didn't have any other choice -- I had to do it whatever happens," Dasquez said. "I told my mom so, if anything goes wrong, she could bring me to the hospital or get help."
