OkCupid Protests Firefox Over CEO's Anti-Gay Marriage Views

Popular online dating site OkCupid is protesting Firefox by urging its members to use a different Internet browser to search for romance on the site.

OkCupid is protesting Mozilla's new CEO, Brendan Eich, who has supported an anti-same-sex marriage campaign, CNN reports. Mozilla owns Firefox, meaning Eich is also at the helm of the widely-used Internet browser's operations.

When OkCupid members use the site on a Firefox browser, they see a message that encourages them to use an alternative browser to use the site, such as Google Chrome, Safari, Opera or the comically misspelled Internet "Exploder."

The message continues: "Those who seek to deny love and instead enforce misery, shame and frustration are our enemies, and we wish them nothing but failure."

The message also points out that 8 percent of matches made on OkCupid are between same-sex couples.

Mozilla promoted Eich, a longtime employee who served as the company's chief technology officer, to the position of CEO last week. His promotion immediately incited anger in third-party developers and employees alike.

Eich donated $1,000 to support Proposition 8, the California ballot initiative to ban same-sex marriage in the state, in 2008. His donation was made public in 2012, but Eich was still kept on as a Mozilla employee.

After Eich's promotion to CEO was announced, app development company Rarebit said it would pull its apps from Firefox. "As a married gay couple who are co-founders of this venture, we have chosen to boycott all Mozilla projects," Rarebit founder Hampton Catlin wrote in a letter to the company.

Mozilla employees have also spoken out about their opposition to Eich's promotion, with some taking to Twitter to criticize Eich and to call for him to step down.

In response, Eich wrote a blog posting on his personal site last week saying he plans to support LGBT-friendly policies at Mozilla, and that he feels "sorrow at having caused pain."

"I am committed to ensuring that Mozilla is, and will remain, a place that includes and supports everyone," he continued.

However, the apology has not abated the public's criticism of Eich. OkCupid is one of many companies that are taking a stand against Eich's promotion.

A Mozilla spokesperson said that OkCupid is misinformed about their company's policies, and that they do support same-sex marriage.

"Mozilla supports equality for all, including marriage equality for LGBT couples. No matter who you are or who you love, everyone deserves the same rights and to be treated equally," the spokesperson said in a statement. "OKCupid never reached out to us to let us know of their intentions, nor to confirm facts."
