With only a few weeks left until the U.S. Open, some of the best in the world of golf test their skills against one another as the first round of the 2013 PGA Tour Memorial Tournament.
The field is looking competitive at the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, with some of the biggest names from the world of golf looking to test their skills in pursuit of the $ 1,116,000 share of the $6.2 million purse for the tourney.
Tiger Woods, the No.1 player in the golf world, enters the tournament as a man on fire, having won four of his last five tournaments, including the PGA Players Championship. Woods is being touted as the odds-on favorite to win at the tournament, as he has won the tournament five times--in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2009 and last year--and has the wind at his back. Altogether, Woods has made more than $5 million at the tournament.
"For some reason, I just feel comfortable on (Nicklaus-designed) golf courses, the way he sets it up," said Woods before the tournament on Wednesday, asFox Sports.com reported. "There is ample room off the tees. The greens are really severe. If you miss the greens, it tests your short game. Those are the things that I think I do well."
However, Rory McIlroy, the No.2-ranked player in the world, will also be at the greens in Dublin as he looks to take his crack at winning the Memorial with the U.S. Open coming up in June. At Muirfield, McIlroy tied for 10th, fifth and missed the cut in his last three years, but is hoping for a better outcome this time around. In addition, Matt Kuchar, No.9 in the world, another player with some success at Muirfield in recent years, will also throw his name in the hat, along with other contenders such as Adam Scott, Justin Rose, Brandt Snedeker, Lee Westwood, Luke Donald and more.
