Charming fought his greatest fears on the latest episode of "Once Upon a Time."
In "The Tower," Charming (Josh Dallas) has a nightmare of Emma (Jennifer Morrison) in the nursery she was kicked out of at birth, with Emma telling him, "You failed me." He awakens to see Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin) looking out the window of the castle they recovered. She tells him that she's pregnant.
Meanwhile, Rumplestilskin (Robert Carlyle) is murmuring to himself as he spins gold thread in the Wicked Witch/Zelena's (Rebecca Mader) dungeon cage. She shaves him, and tells him she learned how to shave a man from shaving her father, indicating that Rumple is not her father.
Zelena then goes to the antique store and meets Belle (Emilie de Ravin), pretending that she's there to buy a baby gift. She then freezes Belle, opens Rumple's safe and takes something out of a jar. It turns out that the jar contains night root.
In Storybrooke, David meets the new midwife at home. Zelena, the new midwife, is talking with Snow. Snow tells David that Zelena knew her nanny growing up. While they discuss that, Zelena crumbles night root into one of the cups of tea that David is drinking, and David drinks it.
In the Fairytale Land That Was, Charming hears a woman scream. It turns out that the woman is Rapunzel. She says she's a king's daughter who left her kingdom to find night root. She said she used to have nightmares after her brother died, and the night root, which is supposed to eliminate nightmares, didn't work.
Then a witchy figure in a cloak arrives and climbs the stairs of Rapunzel's tower.
Back in Storybrooke, David sees a figure on the road. He leaves a message for Emma, thinking he's found the Wicked Witch.
David tracks the figure, and the group treks through the snow to Zelena's house. They pause before they go down the storm cellar, and Emma sees David's message. David then stabs a cloaked figure, but the figure doesn't die. The figure takes off its cloak, and it turns out to be David. The night root has manifested David's fears, and the witch has taken away his courage. David is now fighting with himself.
Then, in a flashback to Rapunzel, Charming insists that Rapunzel should face her fears. He falls out of the window, but hangs onto her hair. He says that if she cuts her hair, she can leave the tower. Rapunzel cuts her hair, and the cloaked figure--the witch--falls away.
She confesses that she's been afraid to go home since her brother died. She then gathers up the courage to go back home, and reunites with her family.
In the present, David confronts his fears about being a good father, and the shadowy figure disappears.
Regina then understands that the witch is toying with them. David says that they have to send the witch back to Oz.
The gang then go down the witch's cellar, seeing that the lock is broken. They find that Rumple/Gold's cage is empty.
On the next episode, "Quiet Minds," "Neal finds himself back in Storybrooke, yearning for a way to reconnect with his son Henry, while also trying to find his own father, Rumplestiltskin. Meanwhile, in Fairy Tale Land of The Past Year, Neal - with the help of Belle and enchanted candelabra Lumiere (True Blood's Henri Lubatti) -- attempts to find a magical solution to bring back Rumplestiltskin from the dead."
