NBA Draft 2014 Rumors: Andrew Wiggins Still No. 1 Prospect Despite NCAA Tournament Meltdown

Kansas freshman Andrew Wiggins is still projected to be picked first overall in the highly anticipated 2014 NBA Draft despite failing to lead the Jayhawks to this year's NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.

Wiggins, who averaged 17.1 points and 5.9 rebounds this season, was limited to just four points on 1-for-6 shooting from the field in their 60-57 loss to the Stanford Cardinal in the third round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament on Sunday.

Some analysts believe that Wiggins' meltdown in their game against Stanford could affect his draft stock, but ESPN insider Chad Ford said otherwise.

In his latest ESPN Chat session, Ford noted that Wiggins is still on top of the Big Board, while also adding that he is convinced most mock drafts will still list the Canadian guard as this year's top prospect.

Anything can still happen between now and the draft in June, particularly when teams conduct workouts for top prospects, but Ford said that he will be surprised if another prospect will overtake Wiggins before draft night.

"I haven't heard anyone in the NBA suggest that this one game will affect his draft stock at all," Ford said of Wiggins' poor performance against Stanford. "He's the No. 1 guy on our board and he's the No. 1 guy on most NBA boards right now. That can still change as we get into workouts and physicals, but I'd be surprised if it did."

Some analysts questioned Wiggins' willingness to take over when the game is on the line, as illustrated by his six field goal attempts—his fewest since having just five shots in their 80-78 loss to Marcus Smart-led Oklahoma State in January.

Ford noted, though, that Wiggins had just four points and six shot attempts not because he's too passive, but because Stanford did a great job in limiting his touches. Ford quickly added that that the 19-year-old prospect should improve his skills set if he wants to make an immediate impact in the NBA.

"He was really well defended and didn't come up with an alternative," Ford said of Wiggins. "Of course, in the NBA, you are also really well defended. Defenses take away the things you love to do. Wiggins is going to have to continue to improve his skill set."
