An 8-year-old girl's family felt pressured to pull her out of a Christian school in Virginia after school administrators said that she did not look feminine enough.
Sunnie Kahle's legal guardians say that educators at the private Timberlake Christian School in Lynchburg felt that the little girl's short haircut was not appropriate and violated their moral standing, reports MSN.
Sunnie likes to keep her hair short and prefers wearing sporty clothing. She told CBS affiliate WDBJ that she likes collecting autographed baseballs, hunting knives, stuffed animals and jewelry. "It's fun," Sunnie said.
She also said that her former schoolmates at Timberlake Christian School would sometimes ask her if she was a boy or girl.
Her grandmother, however, did not see a problem with Sunnie's "tomboy" behavior. "Sunnie realizes she's a female but she wants to do boy things," Doris Thompson told WDBJ.
But administrators at Timberlake Christian School did not agree and sent Sunnie's grandparents a letter reminding them of their school policy.
"You're probably aware that Timberlake Christian School is a religious, Bible believing institution providing education in a distinctly Christian environment," read the letter according to ABC 27. "We believe that unless Sunnie as well as her family clearly understand that God has made her female and her dress and behavior need to follow suit with her God-ordained identity, that TCS is not the best place for her future education."
The letter went on to criticize Sunnie for confusing the other students about her gender identity and implied that the child was sexually immoral. To back up their accusations, the school used Bible verses to affirm Christianity's opposition to homosexuality and alternative gender identities.
Now Sunnie attends a public school and according to Thompson, she misses her friends at her old school so much that "she cries every morning to get on the bus, she cries when she comes home because she wants to go back to Timberlake Christian with her friends."
