Apple vs. Samsung Tablet Market Share 2013: Apple Inc. Tablet Shipments Down from Q2 2012; Amazon, Samsung Gain Big Numbers

The tablet market is still increasing and this year's second-quarter figures, from Canalys, show impressive gains for Amazon and Samsung.
According to Canalys, an independent analyst firm, 34 million tablets were shipped during the second quarter of 2013, which is a 43 percent increase from the same quarter last year. The analytical firm noted that tablets account for 31 percent of the worldwide PC shipments.
Of the 34 million units shipped, Apple's iPad tablets represented 42.7 percent. Of the iPad market share percentage, it accounted for 14,617,000 units. Despite the commanding lead in the tablet market share, the figure is a 14.2 percent drop in comparison to the second quarter of 2012. The second quarter of 2012 saw Apple tablets with 71.2 percent of the market share with just over 17 million units shipped.
Samsung maintained its second-place position but saw a growth of 294.8 percent from 2012's second quarter. Samsung tablets amassed 7,371,000-shipped units, or 21.6 percent of the market share. In the second quarter of 2012, Samsung received 7.8 percent.

Amazon finished in third place, defeating Acer's tablet numbers. Amazon accounted for 4.5 percent in the second quarter of 2013, up from 1.8 percent seen in the same period last year. Based on Canalys' figures, Amazon shipped 1,550,000 units in the recent quarter, which represents a growth from 265.5 percent from last year.
Lenovo and Acer finished fourth and fifth place, respectively with 4.3 percent of the market share, each. Acer and Lenovo, despite its positions, saw a growth of 228 percent and 317 percent from last year, respectively.
"When Apple does decide to refresh its iPad range it will not experience the buzz of previous launches," said Canalys Analyst James Wang. "Tablets are now mainstream products and hardware innovation is increasingly difficult. With branded Android tablets available for less than $150, the PC market has never been so good for consumers, who are voting with their wallets."
