March Madness continues in the West as regional favorite and No.1 seed the Arizona Wildcats are ready to start their NCAA championship campaign, taking on No.16 seed Weber State on Friday afternoon.
Meanwhile, the No.3 Creighton Bluejays will also hit the court against Louisiana-Lafayette while No.8 seed Gonzaga and No.9 Oklahoma State are pitted in an interesting clash on the second day of the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship.
The tournament kicked off in scintillating fashion on Thursday with three big casualties recorded in the first round. North Dakota, the No.12 seed in the West, pulled off a stunner against No.5 seed Oklahoma 80-75 to shake things up in the bracket.
The other top seeds safely cruised to the second round with No.2 seed Wisconsin booking a 75-35 win against No.15 American University, No.4 seed San Diego State escaping New Mexico State, 73-69 and No.7 Oregon blowing by BYU 87-68.
West Regional First Round - Day 2
The Wildcats aren't the top seed in their bracket for nothing. With Aaron Gordon and T.J. McConnell forming perhaps the best guard-forward combination in the nation, Arizona is certainly a force to be reckoned with throughout the course of the tourney. On Friday, the Wildcats' claws will be tested against Weber State's nothing-to-lose mentality as they duke it out at 2:10 pm. EST.
Arizona head coach Sean Miller is aware that his boys need not be complacent against a No.16 seed squad in Weber State, which is averaging at least 18.3 three-pointers per game and has the 20th best three-point percentage in the nation.
"One of the keys for us tomorrow is we can't get caught up in our seed vs. the seed that we're playing," Miller told ESPN. "This is a basketball game in the NCAA tournament and what we have talked about a lot is we're trying to be a good team tomorrow."
Creighton has a lot to prove after getting the No.3 seed in the West. After finishing the season with a 26-7 record, the Bluejays are out to prove that they are a serious contender in the tourney. They have a great opportunity to make a statement against No.14 seed LA-Lafayette at 3:10 p.m EST.
Meanwhile, the game between Baylor and Nebraska will open the second day of the West Regional at 12:40 p.m EST while another interesting matchup between the Zags and the Cowboys will take place at 4:40 p.m EST.
