The gorgeous Chanel Iman recently modeled for Net-A-Porter's Magazine, The Edit.
This 23-year-old model has been working since she was 15, and she has been the face of Ralph Lauren, DKNY and Gap. She also made the cover of Vogue and was in Beyonce's "Yonce" video.
When she sat down and watched the Oscars earlier this month, she and her friends held hands when the best supporting actress was announced. She felt that by Lupita Nyong'o winning, she too was winning.
"Then when she did it was like we had been given the award," she said. "Because I really believe that having a black woman win an Oscar is going to help pave the way, not just in her industry, but mine."
Chanel Iman has never been shy about speaking out against the industry's practices. In the latest issue, she tells The Edit that it's not one that she will be quieted on either. The industry still has some work to do.
"I think that everyone should be equal; it shouldn't be about color," she said. "It's unfortunate that there is still a lot of politics involved in both the acting and modeling worlds. I do think we've come a long way, but things could still be a lot more diverse on the runway and in films."
She even started speaking out on the subject when she was less established, telling people that because designers had already found their one black girl that she couldn't walk for the show. Chanel Iman doesn't think that this has affected her career. She's just being honest.
One of her biggest accomplishments, she said, is working with Beyonce, who also cast Joan Smalls and Jourdan Dunn.
"All three of us models are very successful in our careers, but because in the fashion industry 'there's only one black girl allowed', they've made us compete to be that one girl," she said. "Beyoncé allowed us to show the world that we don't have to fight against each other. She gave us the chance to see that we are far more powerful together."
