Derrick Rose will likely make his much awaited return, not this season, but in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain as reports during the weekend indicated that the Chicago Bulls will allow the superstar point guard to play for Team USA.
According to ESPN Chicago, Bulls executives are convinced that the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup stint could work wonders for Rose, who is currently sidelined by a right knee injury.
"Our thinking is that it would be a terrific opportunity for him," Bulls general manager Gar Forman said. "And we would be supportive of him playing."
Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau is also hoping that Rose will be able to play in September for Team USA, noting that Rose's previous national team stint played an important role in the point guard's development.
Rose played in the 2010 FIBA World Basketball Championship in Turkey and then became the youngest Most Valuable Player in NBA history the season after his national team stint.
The 25-year-old point guard, who has only played in 10 of Chicago's last 165 games since the 2012 NBA Playoffs, has also expressed desire to play for Team USA again this summer.
"If my leg is feeling healthy and I'm there, then I'm all in. Of course I want to play for that team. Playing for that team helped the year that I won MVP, just getting in a groove, so I'm excited if I am able to play in it," Rose said.
USA Basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski, who named Rose to the 28-man pool, is also hoping that the three-time All-Star point guard will be ready in time for the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
"Well, I'm hoping 100 percent. We're all hoping that he'll be part of the group that comes in there," Krzyzewski said. "And then just because we haven't seen him play to see how he's doing. We'd never try to put him in harm's way for his career. But if he's ready, we'd welcome Derrick. Derrick's one of the great guys, in addition to being an outstanding player. He's a great team guy. And that's why we want him part of USA Basketball."
