Miguel Cotto is considered an underdog heading into his showdown with Sergio Martinez on June 7 at Madison Square Garden because of his smaller stature, but the Puerto Rican boxing icon is unfazed any size disparity between the two fighters.

During their recent press conferences, boxing experts noted that Martinez, who is a natural middleweight, is too big for Cotto, who was previously considered as a small junior middleweight fighter during his recent fights.

But in an interview with BoxingScene, Cotto said that he is not worrying about Martinez's size advantage.

"He's not too big. He's just 5'9 or 5'10; I'm 5'7 ½," Cotto said. "I trust in myself and my skills and what I'm capable of doing in the ring and I know I'm going to do my best."

Cotto and Martinez will meet at a 159-pound catchweight, which is one pound shy of the middleweight limit.

When asked if he is planning to bulk up heading into fight night, Cotto, who previously campaigned at the 154-pound division, insisted that he has no plans to put on additional weight.

"I'm going to fight at a weight I'm going to feel comfortable at and to feel strong enough and have the energy to fight," Cotto said. "I'm not necessarily going to 160. I'm going to be at the weight where I feel comfortable. All I want is to be prepared enough to beat Sergio Martinez."

Canelo Alvarez Could Be Next in Line for Cotto

If Cotto beats Martinez in their upcoming WBC middleweight title showdown, the 33-year-old former champion said that he will be open to facing Saul "Canelo" Alvarez later this year.

Before opting to face Martinez in June, Cotto was reportedly offered a $10 million guaranteed fight purse to face Canelo.

However, Cotto declined; he said he is more interested in facing Martinez because he is aiming to become the first Puerto Rican to win four world titles in as many divisions.

"The possibility of facing Alvarez was real. We had a meeting with Golden Boy Promotions in Los Angeles and there was an offer on the table. But for us it was more attractive to face Sergio Martinez at this moment in my career. If perhaps in the future a fight with Canelo will be presented for consideration, I will think about it again," Cotto said.
