"La Malquerida" has a new leading lady in Lucero.

Many big names were considered for the main role, such as Silvia Navarro, Victoria Ruffo and Cecilia Suárez, but Televisa chose to go with Lucero, according to La Opinion.

This may be the actress' 10th telenovela in her career, but it's going to be a difficult comeback. She has to win the public over again after a picture emerged earlier this year of Lucero and her boyfriend smiling while they stood over a dead animal. The singer defended herself after publications said she killed the animal for fun, and people on Twitter called her a murderer.

Some said the pictures revealed the singer had a dark side. Others said that the real reason she killed the animal was so that she could display it's horns in her home.

"What bothers me most and is unbelievable to me is that someone would steal photos from my private life and make them public," she said. "What is most out of place is that these pictures were mixed from different activities and moments, but someone has tried to pass them off as the same event."

Lucero said the pictures were taken out of context, but the public remained unconvinced, so she had to drop out of the Festival Viña del Mar, where she was serving as a judge.

The production team is now in damage control so that people will want to tune in when the show premieres. They'll be preparing a strong campaign to win over audiences for the next few weeks.

"La Malquerida" will be based off the 1913 play written by Spanish author Jacinto Benavente.
