"Grey's Anatomy" returned last week with the answer to the biggest question on fans' minds: Will April choose Matthew or Jackson?
In "Take It Back," fans see that April (Sarah Drew) chose Jackson (Jesse Williams) as they emerge from the barn and jump into Jackson's car. They drive off, full of joy, until April realizes what she's done and panics. After a brief discussion about their relationship, they decide to drive to Nevada and get hitched in Reno.
Meanwhile, Alex (Justin Chambers) forgives his father, and ensures that his last moments on earth are peaceful. He and Jo (Camilla Luddington) also get "accidentally engaged."
Owen (Kevin McKidd) is being extra hard on Shane (Gaius Charles) after his breakdown, botching Jimmy's surgery, and especially because he's slept with Cristina (Sandra Oh). Richard (James Pickens Jr.) tries to get Shane to join his crew so he doesn't feel so left out. Meanwhile, Ben (Jason George) is in the surgical program, and is fighting with Bailey (Chandra Wilson) over bagged lunches again.
Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw), who are still figuring out their relationship, buy a house together.
Later, Derek (Patrick Dempsey) is vetted by the president of the United States, and some information about his past makes it seem like he has a lovechild. It turns out he doesn't—he accidentally put a kid into a coma in high school, and sends the family money as an act of repentance.
Leah (Tessa Ferrer) urges Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) to complain to HR about the constant hookups among the staff out of personal bitterness. Someone ends up complaining, so the board approves a policy about disclosing relationships.
After running off together, the hospital staff is confused why April and Jackson are avoiding each other at work. Jackson goes home and makes dinner with April, and tells her they will have to reveal the secret that they're married to their co-workers.
Sarah Drew spoke to TVLine about the episode, saying Jackson and April have "become villains."
"I love April and Jackson together, so it's a mixed bag," she said. "They've also just destroyed some people's lives and that's pretty sad. And what we begin to see with Jackson and April as the season progresses is that there are things they just have not thought about that start to come up."
She added that Matthew is humiliated by how things turned out, and doesn't want to see April ever again.
She said that April and Jackson eloping is "great television," but that "it's so hard because you want the people that you're rooting for to just have this beautiful, happy experience. But, the fact of the matter is, [Jackson and April] also just became villains. They have created such a horrible, horrifying situation for two people who, up until that second, thought that they were in love with them. It's just awful."
Pain aside, April and Jackson are going to have a romantic, fulfilling relationship, with "cool stuff" that Drew said "fans are going to get excited about."
"There are some pretty big issues that they never talked about," Drew explained. "For instance, how are their potential children going to be raised? These are things that most [married couples] have already talked about. They're best friends, but they've never actually dated. They had a sexual relationship that lasted a little bit of time, but they weren't even really dating! [Laughs] Things are going to come up that are going to point out some pretty fundamental differences between the two of them."
In the next episode, "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," "...an anonymous complaint is issued by one of their own, [and] the hospital implements a non-fraternizing policy causing the couples to panic. Meanwhile, Emma and Owen talk about the future, Cristina and Meredith enjoy a little girl time and Richard enlists the residents to help research a rare cancer case."
Then on the March 13 episode of the series, Arizona will have a personal awakening.
Jessica Capshaw told TVLine that her character Arizona will have a revelation on a "really bad day in her life."
"But [whereas] a really bad day in her life used to be all about, 'I lost a leg and it's all about the leg,' this episode is, ironically, about: She lost a leg but she's actually OK. You can have a normal bad day that's not all about the leg; it's just had a bad day," Capshaw said. "She has a new normal."
Watch the promo for the next episode below, which airs Thursday at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.
