Argentine brawler Marcos Maidana could pull off the biggest upset in boxing history with his trainer Roberto Garcia brewing a concrete plan for his prize fighter to topple the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
In an interview with Fight Hype last week, the formerTrainer of the Year claimed the Argentine only needs to deliver a better version of the showing he had against Adrien Broner last December in order to defeat Mayweather.
"You know what? I'm not going to start brand new. I do have a lot of things that we did against Broner that should also be effective against Mayweather," Garcia told Fight Hype when asked what plan he has under his sleeves in his fighter's upcoming showdown with "Money" May.
Not in the Same League
Garcia admitted that Maidana and Mayweather are not in the same league, pointing out the Grand Rapids native has advantage in speed and boxing skills. Still, the trainer insisted that it doesn't mean Maidana will be an easy opponent come fight night. The Argentine has a gameplan in place, he stressed.
"They're not in the same league and I agree with that," Garcia said. "Mayweather's just totally something else, but, going into the fight, it was that Broner could be the next Mayweather and kind of wants to fight the same way that Mayweather fights. You know, I'm not saying that we're going to go in against another Broner, definitely not, but there are some similarities, so we are going to take advantage of it."
Garcia believes that his experience against Broner is huge advantage for the upcoming bout against Mayweather.
"We are going to work extra harder for that, but you know, styles make fights. I said it before the Broner fight, nobody thought we had a chance.," said Garcia. "Everybody thought we were going to lose to Broner. Very few people gave Maidana a shot, but I always said, you know, we don't have to be better than him; we just have to come out with a good game plan and have the style to beat him. If we fight just the way we did, then we pull it off."
Maidana and Mayweather will meet inside the ring on May 3 at MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nev. The WBC and WBA welterweight title belts will be up for grabs in that showdown.
