After months of waiting, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Brian Vera will settle the score once and for all in a grudge match on Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
Chavez Jr. will finally have the chance to redeem himself and squash criticsm of his controversial win over Vera last year, when he meets again the rugged ring veteran in a rematch that could go either way.
Heavily criticized for his immaturity and lack of discipline, Chavez Jr. is out to prove to everyone that he's already grown a lot since his last appearance in the ring in September.
The 28-year-old Chavez, the son of the legendary Mexican brawler Julio Cesar Chavez, already fired a warning shot at Vera's camp, saying his best has yet to come.
"Vera has not seen the best Julio. I had my best training camp since I fought Andy Lee. I am ready to fight. Vera is a true warrior. I have had much success in Texas, especially in San Antonio and am looking for giving the fans something they can remember-hopefully the Fight of the Year," Chavez told Lem Satterfield of The Ring Magazine.
HBO.com's Nat Gottlieb also believes that Chavez Jr. is a much better all-around fighter than Vera. However, the Texas native might have a chance to pull off a stunner if the Mexican continues to be passive in the match.
"There isn't much doubt as to which of these two fighters is the more skilled boxer. Chavez has that edge by a generous margin. But the real edge he will need to beat Vera for the second straight time is something that eluded him in their first fight: fire in the belly," Gottlieb stated in his pre-fight analysis.
In the undercard, former featherweight champion Orlando Salido will be taking on two-time Olympic gold medalist Vasyl Lomachenko in a very intriguing showdown in the featherweight class.
Salido was stripped of the title after tipping above the weight limit, while Lomachenko enters the match as the favorite despite coming off his professional boxing debut in October, a fourth round TKO win over Jose Ramirez.
