The Oakland Raiders are the most ideal landing spot for free agent quarterback Michael Vick, who wants to be a starter again for an NFL franchise, a reliable league insider disclosed on Thursday.
Vick, who lost his starting job to Nick Foles in perhaps his final year with the Philadelphia Eagles, is looking for another shot at glory, and this time, he might find it with the "silver and black."
In the latest CBS Sports NFL insider article, Jason La Canfora indicated that the market is strong for the former Pro Bowl quarterback. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Houston Texans, and Minnesota Vikings are possible destinations for the former Eagles starter, with the Raiders and the New York Jets having emerged as the front-runners for his service.
"Michael Vick is one of the more attractive names available in a shallow free-agent market at quarterback and should have multiple options," wrote La Canfora. "A recent report linked him to the Jets, but league sources believe Jets GM John Idzik would not be inclined to spend in the range it would likely take to land Vick, and regardless, other teams are interested. The Raiders are mulling several veteran quarterbacks, Vick included, and that looks like the best opportunity for Vick to start quickly."
Vick Is Best Option for Raiders
The Philadelphia Eagles are also interested in keeping Vick, who is well-liked in the locker room and has learned to accept his role as backup to Foles last season. However, the Raiders may prove to be an intriguing option for Vick because of their need at the quarterback position.
Incoming third-year quarterback Terrelle Pryor had a solid 2013-14 football season, but Vick would give Pryor stiff competition at training camp and provide the Raiders with a veteran signal-caller with the ability to inflict damage in the air and on the ground.
San Jose Mercury News writer Marcus Thompson III believes Vick is a good free agency option for the Raiders as they address their other needs in the upcoming 2014 NFL Draft.
"Even though he'll be 34 when the season begins, Vick is still a solid option. He perhaps will never be what he was, but the smart move would be to milk him for what he has left during this transitional phase," wrote Thompson. "He still has the legs to force defenses to pay attention, and he has a cannon for an arm they must respect. As Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick showed in the postseason, that's a valuable commodity."
